Shabtai Shavit, head of the seventh Mossad (1989-1996), passed away today (Tuesday) at the age of 84, during a private vacation in Italy.
Upon learning of his passing, the head of the Mossad, David Barnea, issued a statement of participation in the grief of the family and those serving in the Mossad. Shavit was a pillar of the world of operations, intelligence, and strategic security of the State of Israel. He joined the Mossad in 1964, and began his career in the organization as a collection officer for the "junction" in Iran, served in operational and command positions in Israel and abroad, headed by head of the Caesarea division and deputy head of the Mossad.
During his tenure as head of the Mossad, Shavit worked to expand and strengthen the secret relations between the Mossad and organizations and countries in the regional and global spheres, first and foremost his contribution to the establishment of the peace agreement signed between Israel and Jordan.
After his retirement, Shavit continued to contribute greatly to the preservation of organizational heritage and knowledge, and educated generations of Mossad leaders.
